Custom Wood Staining

Rich, custom-matched wood staining for doors, beams, ceilings, and exterior wood.

Expert Custom Wood Staining

Wood is meant to be seen, not hidden — and the right stain brings out the grain, depth, and character that make natural wood extraordinary. Our custom wood staining service covers interior and exterior wood alike: front doors, windows, exposed beams, wood ceilings, cedar siding, garage doors, and more. We custom-match colors, layer transparent, semi-solid, and solid stains, and seal everything with durable protective topcoats. From a Winnetka library with coffered wood ceilings to a Lake Forest cedar exterior, we make wood look its absolute best.

How We Get the Job Done

Our process is designed for safety, efficiency, and quality at every step. We don't cut corners — we follow a proven system that delivers consistent, exceptional results.

01

Consultation & Color Matching

We assess your wood species and condition, discuss the look you want, and prepare sample boards so you can approve the exact color and sheen before we start. Custom matching to existing woodwork is our specialty.

02

Surface Preparation

We clean, strip old failing finishes where needed, and sand the wood progressively to open the grain and create an even surface that accepts stain uniformly — no blotching, no lap marks.

03

Wood Conditioning

On blotch-prone species like pine and cedar, we apply a pre-stain wood conditioner so the stain penetrates evenly and the grain reads beautifully instead of splotchy.

04

Stain Application

We apply your chosen transparent, semi-solid, or solid stain by hand, working with the grain and wiping to the exact depth of color approved on your sample. Multiple coats are layered where a richer tone is desired.

05

Drying & Inspection

We allow proper dry time between coats and inspect for evenness, checking the color in natural light before sealing. This is where craftsmanship shows — no rushed, uneven results.

06

Protective Topcoat

We seal interior wood with durable clear topcoats and protect exterior wood with UV- and moisture-resistant finishes like PPG ProLuxe, extending the life and beauty of the stain for years.

07

Final Detailing & Walkthrough

We buff, touch up any thin spots, reinstall hardware, and walk the finished work with you in good light. We don't finish until the wood looks exactly how you pictured it.

Materials We Use

We only use professional-grade products from trusted brands. The quality of materials is just as important as the quality of application — and we never compromise on either.

Minwax Wood Finish Penetrating Stain

A trusted interior oil-based stain available in a wide range of classic tones — deep penetration and rich, even color for doors, trim, and built-ins.

General Finishes Gel Stain

A thick, controllable gel stain ideal for doors, railings, and vertical surfaces — excellent for evening out blotch-prone woods and refinishing without full stripping.

PPG ProLuxe (Sikkens) Wood Finish

A premium exterior wood finish engineered for cedar siding, front doors, and garage doors — outstanding UV protection and a rich, tough, long-lasting film.

General Finishes Exterior 450 Topcoat

A durable water-based exterior topcoat that seals and protects stained wood from moisture and sun without yellowing.

Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner

Prepares softwoods like pine and cedar to accept stain evenly, preventing the blotching that ruins so many DIY staining projects.

Osmo Polyx-Hardwax Oil

A premium penetrating hardwax oil for interior beams, ceilings, and built-ins — enhances grain and provides a natural, durable, easy-to-maintain finish.
