Interior & Exterior Limewash

Breathable, natural limewash finishes for brick, stucco, stone, and interior walls.

Expert Interior & Exterior Limewash

Limewash is one of the oldest and most beautiful finishes in the world — a breathable, mineral-based coating that soaks into masonry and develops a soft, cloudy, ever-changing patina no modern paint can imitate. We apply Romabio Classico and Portola limewash and Roman Clay to brick, stucco, stone, fireplaces, chimneys, and full home exteriors, as well as interior accent walls. It's moisture-tolerant, environmentally friendly, and ages gracefully. For North Shore and Lake County homeowners who love the timeless European look — think a whitewashed Highland Park brick colonial or a Winnetka stucco facade — limewash is transformative.

How We Get the Job Done

Our process is designed for safety, efficiency, and quality at every step. We don't cut corners — we follow a proven system that delivers consistent, exceptional results.

01

Surface Assessment & Consultation

We evaluate your masonry — brick, stucco, or stone — and its condition, discuss the color and level of patina you want, and determine the right limewash system for the surface.

02

Sample Application

We apply limewash samples on your actual surface so you can see how it soaks in and develops on your specific brick or stucco. Limewash behaves differently on every substrate, so real samples matter.

03

Surface Cleaning & Prep

We clean the masonry thoroughly and, for previously painted surfaces, apply the appropriate mineral primer so the limewash can bond. Raw masonry is dampened to control absorption.

04

Priming (When Required)

On sealed or previously painted masonry, we apply Romabio's mineral primer so the limewash adheres properly. On raw, porous brick and stucco, limewash bonds naturally without primer.

05

First Limewash Coat

We brush on the first coat of limewash, working it into the texture of the masonry. This foundation coat establishes the base tone and begins building the characteristic soft, cloudy depth.

06

Second Coat & Patina Work

We apply a second coat and, where desired, manipulate the finish with water and brushwork to create an aged, mottled patina — the hallmark of authentic limewash that gives it soul.

07

Curing & Final Review

Limewash carbonates and hardens as it cures, deepening in character over days. We review the finished work with you and explain how it will continue to age gracefully over time.

Materials We Use

We only use professional-grade products from trusted brands. The quality of materials is just as important as the quality of application — and we never compromise on either.

Romabio Classico Limewash

A premium Italian slaked-lime limewash for exterior and interior masonry — breathable, mold-resistant, and available in beautiful natural tones that age gracefully.

Romabio Masonry Mineral Primer

The essential primer for applying limewash over previously painted or sealed masonry, allowing the mineral finish to bond and perform correctly.

Portola Paints Lime Wash

A refined interior and exterior lime wash offering soft, chalky, mottled color depth favored by designers for feature walls and facades.

Portola Roman Clay

A smooth, troweled lime-based plaster finish that creates a suede-like, movement-filled surface — stunning on interior accent walls and fireplaces.

Romabio BioDomus Interior Limewash

A breathable interior mineral finish that regulates humidity and delivers the authentic soft limewash look on drywall and plaster.

Natural-Bristle Limewash Brushes

Wide, soft masonry brushes designed specifically for limewash application, allowing the finish to be worked into texture and manipulated for patina.

Why Betitos Is the Best Choice

We test limewash on your actual masonry first — it behaves differently on every brick and stucco surface.
We use authentic mineral-based systems like Romabio and Portola, not paint dressed up to look like limewash.
We prime previously painted masonry correctly so the limewash bonds and performs for the long haul.
We hand-work the patina so your finish has real depth and character, not a flat, uniform coat.
Limewash is breathable and moisture-tolerant — ideal for masonry that needs to release moisture.
Fully licensed and insured, with experience limewashing brick and stucco homes across the North Shore.
